After taking pictures of kiteboarders at the 520 Slick, I decided to cross the street and take some candid wind sport photography of one windsurfer and a few wing foilers on the north side of the 520 causeway. I was knee deep in the river with lots of foilers having a complete blast. The windward side is always choppy, but it’s a lot easier to not get blown away from your beach. I’ve experienced It too many times when loads of people making the walk of shame down the beach with their rigs dragging in the water.
It can be difficult to capture the excitement of foiling with a wing. Though it looks like a slow sport, there is a great pleasure of going airborne and flying over the chop as if you’re skimming over glass. It’s a feeling that you have to experience yourself. On the other hand, windsurfers are flying past. Even on full plane, it’s a rough ride and you have to stay aware of chop, waves, gaps, gusts, and lulls the entire time. While not as comfortable as a foil, they are both amazing sports to experience. I often wish wind sports were more popular in the US. Either way, I will always have a blast sailing and taking candid wind sport session photography of those enjoying the thrill.
Wind sports like kiteboarding are very different from surfing. You can’t blow up a location. There is no limit to the number of waves caught. The wind is infinite. Please, don’t say that I’m giving away your (not so) private sailing spot. Take a look! You can see random action sports photographs on Instagram.
